Mechanical Surveys
Mechanical surveys involve a close look at engine, power train, electrical, and other important mechanical systems. We believe that they are best conducted by someone who installs and fixes these kinds of systems.
Q: I have put in a contract to purchase a used boat and my broker recommended a mechanical survey as well as a general Marine Survey. Why do I need a mechanical survey?
A: All though not mandatory by many finance and insurance companies, a thorough Mechanical Survey will give you a good overview of the condition and operation of the systems that a General Marine Survey does not cover in depth, such as:
- Is the propulsion system operating to factory specifications?
- Are auxiliary power systems operating properly?
- What condition is the drive train in?
- How do the electrical systems function?
- What is the estimated life expectancy of current systems and components ?
- What is the estimated repair/replacement cost of systems and components?
A well conducted mechanical survey can save you money, add to your confidence in your boat, and help you decide your priorities for maintenance and improvements to your boat.
Winterizing your boat is absolutely critical in the Maryland climate. We believe that there are "right" and "wrong" ways to do it.
Q: Why is On-Shore winterizing less expensive than winterizing in the water?
A: Through a combination of equipment and technique specially developed by Holm Marine Service we are able to access your intake thru-hulls and supply systems without removing any hoses. That, along with the fact that your entire supply of antifreeze, oil and filters are trucked right up to your boat results in a substantial reduction in man hours. The savings are passed on to you.Q: Is there any risk of freeze damage with "On-Shore Winterizing"?
A: Once the "On Shore Winterizing" process is complete it offers the same level of protection as the in water process. The only difference you will notice is the money you will save.
Many, many performance, reliability and safety issues are related to your boats DC system. We will try to give you answers to the questions that most frequently come up.
Q: I just preformed a Spring Commissioning on my boat. Everything works except I get no response from my starter when I turn the key. Is my engine locked up
A:: I get many calls each spring and sometimes after a customer has installed new batteries. It is almost always related to the "Wing Nut" battery terminal posts. Wing nuts give the impression they will function properly if installed hand tight. That is not enough torque to achieve a proper electrical connection. You must use pliers or channel locks to snug them down good and tight the same as you would a 3/8 and 5/16 hex nut. Be sure to clean battery posts and cable ends before assembly.
